The woman's body was found on the second floor of the home. A man was discovered outside the home with burns and cuts and was taken to a local trauma unit.
The fire was reported at 3:45 a.m. at a home valued at $1.5 million on a one-acre lot in the Olivenhain neighborhood of Encinitas. The cause of the blaze has not been determined.

A homeless man killed by Los Angeles police officers earlier this year on downtown's skid row was shot six times and had methamphetamine in his system at the time of his death, according to an autopsy report.
The March 1 death of Charly Leundeu Keunang, 43, drew international attention after a bystander posted a video of the shooting on Facebook, where it was watched millions of times.

First came a loud crack. Then, a 75-foot pine tree came tumbling down Tuesday evening, crashing on a group of children and summer camp counselors in front of a popular Pasadena children's museum in the Arroyo Seco, witnesses said.
“The kids were screaming, and they were running,” said Greg Prodigalidad, a contractor in Pasadena who was sitting on a bench nearby when he heard the towering tree snap and uproot.
“Once I saw the tree fall, I started running. Me and a bunch of people — we were just moving all the branches away and getting all the kids out.”

A man was beaten and stabbed Sunday night after confronting a group of taggers who were defacing a vacant home in Anaheim, police said.
The man, whose identity was not released, was stabbed about 9:30 p.m. outside the home, Anaheim police said. Police initially said the vacant building was a business.
Described to be in his 40s, the man was in stable condition Monday morning at UCI Medical Center, said Lt. Eric Trapp.

A man was shot and killed in a drive-by attack in South Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon, Los Angeles police said, and three other shootings followed, leaving five wounded.
The first shooting occurred at Hoover and 81st streets about 4 p.m., said Officer Bob Bermudez of the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street station. The shooter was in an SUV, police said.
At 4:55 p.m., another shooting left a male wounded at 75th Street and Figueroa.

Wearing dark sunglasses inside a downtown L.A. courtroom, Sandra Thomas approached the witness stand Thursday and spoke about the Los Angeles police officer she holds responsible for her daughter's death.
“I have to ask God to help me learn how to forgive her,” she said to a judge before the sentencing of LAPD Officer Mary O'Callaghan. Thomas' 35-year-old daughter was handcuffed and assaulted by O'Callaghan during an arrest in 2012. She died shortly after being placed in the back of a squad car, complaining she couldn't breathe.

A woman was held captive in a closet and sexually abused by a Richmond, Calif., man she met on Facebook a year ago, police said.
Richmond police have released limited details about 35-year-old Eulogio Constantino-Sanchez, who they said was arrested Monday on suspicion of kidnapping, rape, abuse and false imprisonment.
Police believe the woman was a victim of human trafficking.

The body went unnoticed for two weeks in the summer heat, decomposing inside a sport utility vehicle parked in the affluent neighborhood of Pacific Palisades.
Once Los Angeles police were called, they traced the dead man inside the vehicle to a town house down the street. There, investigators found roughly two tons of ammunition and more than 1,200 high-end pistols, shotguns and rifles.
The cache of firearms and ammunition was so large that it took police days to remove several truckloads from the canyon home.

The man suspected of killing five people in a Modesto home over the weekend -- including his mother, a woman with whom he had had a relationship and his baby daughter -- may have killed the woman's 2-year-old son last year, police said Monday.
Martin Martinez, 30, was arrested Sunday in San Jose after the bodies of Amanda Crews, 38; Anna Brown Romero, 57; and three children were discovered Saturday afternoon at a house in the 2600 block of Nob Hill Court in Modesto.
Romero was Martinez’s mother, and Martinez and Crews had a prior relationship and were the parents of one of the slain children, a 6-month-old girl, according to police.

A man clad in a bullet-proof vest and believed to have a shotgun was arrested near a Big Lots store in Palms, authorities said.
At 9:05 p.m., witnesses reported disorderly conduct by a man at the store in the 3100 block of Sepulveda Avenue, said Officer Jane Kim, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police shut down the 405 Freeway in both directions near the National Boulevard exit, KCBS-TV Channel 2 reported.

Police won’t be apologizing anytime soon to a 29-year-old Vallejo, Calif., woman and her boyfriend for calling her abduction a hoax.
Vallejo police Capt. John Whitney told KOVR-TV Channel 13 that the department will not issue an apology because it is waiting for the FBI investigation into Denise Huskins’ kidnapping to be completed. Vallejo City Manager Daniel Keen insisted that police never stopped investigating her kidnapping.

In the two years since Gardena police officers fatally shot an unarmed man, city officials fought to keep graphic video of the killing under wraps.
The grainy videos, captured by cameras mounted in two patrol cars, show three men mistakenly suspected of stealing a bicycle standing in a street under the glare of police lights. With their weapons trained on them, officers scream at the men to keep their hands up.

Four months ago, 29-year-old Denise Huskins turned up in Huntington Beach, saying she had been kidnapped from her home here and held ransom.
Vallejo police were skeptical, calling the case a “wild goose chase” and a waste of police resources. Authorities from the Northern California town even warned that Huskins and her boyfriend, who said he was drugged during the kidnapping, could face criminal charges themselves for making a false report.

One man was killed and three other people injured Saturday following a crash involving a private ambulance and a Jaguar sedan in Pasadena, authorities said.
The two vehicles collided around 4 p.m. in the 1000 block of Fair Oaks Avenue, just south of Hammond Street, said Pasadena police Lt. Jesse Carrillo. At the time of the accident, the ambulance had been transporting a man in his 70s for "what appeared to be a non-life-threatening medical appointment," he said.

Patrick Comiskey said he was walking his poodle, Louie, on their regular route through their Mid-Wilshire neighborhood Thursday morning when he saw two police officers struggling with a man.
Comiskey, 54, said it appeared the officers — a man and a woman — were trying to put the man’s hands behind his back to arrest him. He watched as the male officer reached behind his back for what Comiskey thought was a pair of handcuffs. Instead, he heard a gunshot.
“It was point-blank,” Comiskey said. “All hell broke loose.”

A man was charged with murder Tuesday, 19 years after the Long Beach slaying took place, because new information came to light, police announced.
Wayne Taufi, 40, of Long Beach was charged with murdering 26-year-old Jorge Martinez, Long Beach police said Wednesday in a news release about the cold case.
Taufi and several other members of the Samoan gang approached Martinez, who was alone, about 10:30 p.m. on May 4, 1996, in the 500 block of East 14th Street, police said.

Five people were hurt, one critically, Tuesday evening when a car slammed into a doughnut shop in Gardena.
The other four victims suffered minor to moderate to injuries, L.A. County Fire dispatcher Ed Pickett said.
The incident happened about 7:20 p.m. near Western and Marine avenues, Pickett said.

The man accused of shooting 32-year-old Kathryn Steinle to death at a popular tourist spot in San Francisco was charged with murder on Monday, the San Francisco district attorney’s office said.
Francisco Sanchez, 45, was charged with murder stemming from the Wednesday shooting at Pier 14, according to a statement from the district attorney’s office.
He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.
In an interview with the Bay Area’s ABC7 News, Sanchez said he accidentally killed Steinle after taking sleeping pills and finding a gun, the station reported. According to the station, which played only a few short clips of the jailhouse interview, Sanchez said the gun fired three times when he picked it up.

Two Bay Area news crews were robbed at gunpoint and a camera operator was pistol-whipped on live TV Thursday while they were reporting on a homicide in San Francisco, according to area news reports.
Crews from KNTV-Channel 11 and KTVU-Channel 2 were reporting live at 6:03 a.m. on the shooting death of a woman at Pier 14 when someone stole camera equipment, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Part of the robbery was captured on air, showing a man hitting KNTV-TV camera operator Alan Waples with a gun.

A ferry carrying 173 passengers capsized Thursday as it left a central Philippine port in choppy waters, leaving at least 36 people dead and 19 others missing, coast guard officials said.
They said at least 118 passengers of the M/B Kim Nirvana were rescued by nearby fishing boats and coast guard personnel or swam to safety off Ormoc city on Leyte Island.
Coast guard spokesman Armand Balilo said the ferry was leaving Ormoc for the Camotes Islands, about 27 miles to the south, when it was lashed by strong waves.
